Self-organising Mobile Networks

The phenomenon of self-organisation is pervasive in many areas of nature. Fish organize themselves to swim in structured clouds, ants find the shortest routes to food, and fireflies emit synchronised light flashes. Typically, such self-organising systems are flexible, adaptive, resilient, and scalable.

A self-organizing Network (SON) is an automation technology designed to make the configuration, management, optimisation and healing of mobile networks simpler and faster. Our research follows a decentralised SON approach in which functions are distributed among the elements at the edge of a mobile network. 

In this context we have been investigated processes related to the coordination of different networking functionality aiming to allow mobile users to access communication sessions over heterogeneous wireless networks. Examples of such functionality is: ubiquitous access, resource reservation, QoS mapping and adaptation, dynamic SLAs, seamless mobility of receivers as well as sources of multicast traffic.

Software
